Paper shredders have varying security levels. A basic strip-cut model suits junk mail, but destroying confidential files must follow a strict protocol using cross-cut or micro-cut shredders.
The German Institute for Standardization developed DIN 66399 to classify shredder security levels by final particle size. ISO/IEC 21964 now reflects this same framework for international use. Understanding P5, P6, and P7 shredder security levels gives people a practical way to match the machine to their workflow.
How Security Levels Work
The “P” category applies to paper destruction. The number after the letter shows how thoroughly a shredder must destroy each sheet. Higher numbers produce smaller particles and greater security.
Particle size affects privacy, speed, capacity, and daily workflow. A machine cutting paper into tiny pieces must work with precision. That means high-security units process documents at a slower pace than low-security machines.
P5 for Confidential Records
A P5 shredder cuts paper into particles no larger than 30 square millimeters. The strip width must stay under two millimeters. This level gives offices strong protection for confidential records without moving into the most restrictive destruction category.
A P5 unit suits offices that handle sensitive paperwork every day. Business teams use P5 machines for personnel files, contract drafts, financial records, and internal reports. These documents contain private information, but they don’t always carry classified status.
Speed remains practical at this level. Since the particles are larger than a P6 or P7 machine output, the shredder processes sheets at a steady pace.
P6 for Restricted Records
At P6, the particle size drops to 10 square millimeters or less, and the strip width must stay under one millimeter. The small shred makes text recovery extremely difficult because each sheet breaks into minuscule fragments.
Government offices, defense contractors, research departments, and executive teams use P6 machines for restricted records. These files may contain strategic details, sensitive communications, or protected project information. Exposure could cause serious organizational harm.
P7 for Classified Records
The highest paper security level in this group is P7. It limits particles to five square millimeters or less. The strip width must stay under one millimeter, so the finished material becomes extremely difficult to reconstruct.
Military offices, intelligence facilities, and secure government sites rely on P7 shredders for classified destruction. This level fits files such as protected identities and national security records. It serves environments where the smallest readable detail could carry a serious risk.
Security drives the design at P7. These machines sacrifice speed for maximum particle reduction. Staff should expect smaller feed batches, careful monitoring, and consistent maintenance. A P-7 unit must cut accurately every time.
Select a Secure Shredder
P5, P6, and P7 shredders are all machines with high security levels. Selecting one machine over the other comes down to data risks and the workflow.
